Which therapies for stuttering are the most popular and beneficial? Are you able to overcome a stutter and achieve fluency? How long does it take to eradicate a stutter? Are there any specialist courses for stuttering that I can attend? Where can I find out about the “stop stuttering techniques”? These are questions that I am asked on a daily basis and ones which I will be answering in this article.

My name is Stephen Hill and I am a speech coach from the UK. I am somebody who successfully managed to overcome his own stutter when I was aged twenty-two. I am now thirty-five and for the last thirteen years I have been helping other people to achieve fluency at the How To Stop Stuttering Centre.

The main form of stuttering/stammering treatment that I offer comes in the form of a specialised speech course for stuttering. The courses are on a one-to-one basis which in my opinion is essential. The courses are held in Birmingham, England and are held over a two, three or five day period.

The most popular form of therapy that I offer; however; happens to be the seventy minute stuttering cure DVD. The film includes full descriptions of each of the techniques that I teach on the courses.

People are also able to purchase an e-book and an audio book; all of these are what I call self-help stuttering treatment products.

Over the last few months I have introduced a couple of new stuttering cure therapy options; the first is fluency coaching over the telephone and the second is stuttering therapy via Skype. These are also starting to become quite popular.

The majority of the people who contact me; whether it be via e-mail, telephone or letter are from the United Kingdom however I do receive a lot of interest from the United States, India, Australia, Ireland, Pakistan, Norway and New Zealand. I have a blog at blog.stammering-stuttering.co.uk which has a map that shows people where the visitors to the site are located. This is something that is quite interesting to keep a track of from time to time.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

There are now numerous forms of therapy available for people who have a stutter. With so many options available which ones are known to be the most productive?

A recent survey has suggested that the most popular form of stuttering therapy comes in the form of specialised one-to-one speech therapy courses which are run by people who have previously had a stutter. These courses are normally held over a five-day period however there are shorter three-day and weekend speech courses available.

The fact that they are run by somebody who has previously had this form of speech impediment makes these courses more popular and effective than the more traditional forms of speech therapy. Speech therapists have not lived life with a stutter and therefore can not fully comprehend just what a struggle life can be etc.

A speech course does not suit everybody for a variety of reasons. For example a person who has a stutter may not have enough confidence to attend such a course or may not be able to afford the course fee.

Fortunately there are also a number of self-help stuttering therapy products on offer. This is where a person attempts to overcome their stutter from the comfort of their own home by following a set of stuttering help techniques. These self-help products include a DVD, an audio book and an e-book.

In the end the survey suggests that it all depends on a person’s individual circumstance but that there is normally a product to suit.

One last thing to remember; it is important that there is a continued after service on offer. This is something which should be available free from cost; the therapist basically making themselves available to answer and queries that arise.

Steve Hill runs the How To Stop Stuttering Centre in the UK where he coaches people to achieve fluency.

The astonishing development in specialised stuttering therapies has been well documented within the media and even Joe Biden, the US vice presidential candidate, has managed to join the debate by stating that he has also managed to overcome a stutter. So what about children who have a stutter, is this stammering therapy of benefit to them as well?

If you ask this question to 100 men who are in their 40s and have this form of speech impediment

Which period of your life has been the most difficult due to your speech impediment? Childhood or adulthood etc?

From the many stutterer’s that I have met since I have been running The How To Stop Stuttering Centre in the UK – I would say that a large percentage of them would say that their childhood was the worst period. For people who stutter there can be many troublesome times as they mature through childhood.

Do kids gain from therapy for stuttering? Well all I can say is that I would have loved somebody to offer me the chance to achieve fluency when I was fourteen years of age, unfortunately this type of specialised stuttering help treatment was not available back then.

To achieve fluency takes a lot of hard work and dedication; that goes without saying. Certain kids are not mature enough or have the conviction to work to the required levels. With their parents help and guidance the therapy will however be of great benefit even to these people as it will at least give them options and make them aware of what they should be doing to speak fluently.

The majority of children would walk to the other side of the world in order to achieve fluency and therefore are more than happy to work very hard towards eradicating the stutter. Specialised stuttering therapy can quite simply change these types of children’s lives.

I had a stutter from the age of four and during the period when I had the speech impediment, I had a fear of certain words beginning with certain letters. The words beginning with the letter b were without doubt the most difficult to say. I also had a fear saying words which began with d, v, g, and p. The way I would cope with these words was by either avoiding them or by findng an alternative word to say. For whatever this reason this was far from easy and I seemed to have these difficult words permanently in my thoughts. I had a lifetime goal which was to attain total fluency; I often dreamt of the day when I would be able to say any word regardless of what letter it began with.

Many different situations would be affected by the stutter, for example I found job interviews very stressful as I would stutter more when I was under pressure.

At the aged of 16 I began to drink alcohol and a short while later I became drunk for the very first time. The results were quite amazing as I could now talk really well. My overall self-confidence and self-esteem had been given a huge boost – even though it was without doubt only a temporary one. The fear of stuttering disappeared and the words began to flow.

I was hoping that the new found stutter-free speech would continue in the morning – this was not to be the case. I felt rather unwell and some what sleepy and the stutter was to return with full force. The previous nights experience had though, for the first time given me a belief that one day I could possibly eradicate my stutter.

There are many forms of stuttering treatment out there including tradional speech therapy, group speech courses, one to one speech courses, and even hypnotherapy. I personally believe that the way to go is one to one speech courses as every person who has a stutter is an individual and has an individual stutter.

There is also self help stuttering therapies available via stuttering therapy ebooks and dvds.

Remember to work hard and to put in the required practice. The techniques do work however they are not some form of magic pill.
