Marpac Sleepmate 980 Review
Is it Sleepmate or Sleep Mate or Soundscreen or Sound Screen? Name confusion is the only problem we found with this machine. This is the white noise machine that started it all, and with its ingeniousengineering, it is still the leader. Now 50 years old, the Marpac Sleep Mate is still the benchmark in the white noise world.
The white noise produced is nearly totally consistent without the surprises that can occur with nature recordings, such as chirping birds or crashing waves. Also, there’s no loop that plays over and over as is the case with recorded noises.
The Marpac Sleepmate comes in two models: The 980A and the 580A. The 980A has two speeds (two volume levels). The 580A has one volume level which is the same as the higher volume on the 980A.
First Opinions It looks strange. It looks like no other sound machine on the market. The power cord is 8 feet long and the unit is bright white as apposed to the ivory color of the proceeding model. You can take any color you require, as long as it’s white. The plastic is thick and the device has a well weight feel to it.
The Marpac 980 models produce a smooth fan like white noise sound that most people find pleasing. In our years of selling white noise machines, Marpac Sleepmate has proven to be the most popular choice. Marpac Sleepmate does not loop (loop means – to play a short segment of sound over and over) like most other models. Finding a unit that doesn’t loop is really critical. If you can notice a repetitive quality in the sound (such as a chirp that repeats over and over every 5 seconds), then that can be as annoyance as the sound you are trying to mask. Again, the Sleepmate 980 is one of the few machines on the market that doesn’t loop.
This sound machine is fabulous because it provides perfect sound that you don’t notice or fixate on while it’s on- it’s soothing and properly shields you from bothersome noises. To sum it up, all I have to say is “Finally, somebody got it right!”.
